Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of a fracture to the foot and ankle may include:
- Pain around the fracture area
- Swelling and potential bruising
- Area is tender to the touch
- Increased pain with activity, relieved with rest
Treatments
Self CareThe doctor may suggest modifying and limiting activity, rest, icing and elevating the foot and ankle.
SupportsA splint, cast or other advanced support may be used to limit the foot and/or ankle during activity, and allow for the healing process to begin.
CrutchesCrutches may also be recommended to allow for mobility without the painful pressure of walking on the fractured area.
SurgeryDepending on the location and severity of the fracture, surgery may be necessary. During the surgical procedure the surgeon will ensure proper alignment of the joint and/or affected bones, and may use a screw or other device to secure the bones in place. This can also reduce the risk of arthritis and allow for proper healing.
