The Beginning of a Big Idea
The idea for TRIA Orthopaedic Center arose as a result of several orthopaedic surgeons realizing
the need to bring all elements of orthopaedic care together to improve patient treatment and
outcomes. These physicians recognized a breakdown in the way that patients, physicians, insurance
companies and hospitals worked together and wanted to reorganize their medical practices in order
to empower patients and re-establish the connection between patients and physicians. At the same
time, they wanted to contribute to the science of orthopaedic medicine and create a center for
orthopaedic research and education.
The First Steps
As the idea for a new orthopaedic center began to take shape, the physicians in the partnership
opened a temporary facility in Eden Prairie. This clinic was established to allow highly specialized,
board certified orthopaedic surgeons from The Orthopaedic Center, Park Nicollet Health Services and
the University of Minnesota to come together in one location with one focus. Designed to house the
growing partnership of physicians while plans for a new building were put into place, The Orthopaedic
Center housed physicians who treated all general musculoskeletal problems including cartilage injuries,
torn ligaments and broken bones and also consulted and treated in specialized areas.
A Unique Partnership
TRIA is a joint venture between a private practice (The Orthopaedic Center), a multi-specialty
healthcare provider (Park Nicollet Health Services) and an academic center (Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery, University of Minnesota Physicians). TRIA builds on the strengths of each of its partners to
benefit patients, medical professionals and the community while advancing the science of orthopaedic
medicine.
Opening New Facility
TRIA physicians and leaders broke ground in Fall 2003 at their soon-to-be permanent location at 494
& France Avenue in Bloomington, Minnesota. On March 15th, 2005, TRIA opened its doors to the public
offering diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, surgery, research and education paired with the most advanced
technology available.
Advancing Orthopaedic Medicine
Since its inception TRIA has brought innovations to the market such as the Acute Injury Clinic, Women's
Sports Program, TRIA PlayStrong, the mobile care unit and TRIA/Hilton Recovery Program. Physicians
and staff continue to develop new programs while collecting, measuring and evaluating the care provided
for the most common conditions to improve and accelerate recovery.
