Innovative and Patient Focused Research
Shadowing and Observation
TRIA Orthopaedic Research Institute.
As part of our mission, TRIA Orthopaedic Center offers students and professionals with an educational need the opportunity to observe orthopaedic professionals during their work day. Individuals who are interested in observing must be at least 16 years-old and complete the following (once per calendar year):
  • Observer Application (PDF): Must be thoroughly completed. If under the age of 18, we need both your signature as well as your parent's. You may electronically sign this document with a digital signature (see the right column for more information regarding electronic signatures), or print and sign a paper copy. Be specific when answering the questions. If there is a certain provider you would like to observe, be sure to include their name on your application form. Your responses help us determine:
    • Educational need for observation.
    • Time frame you are requesting to observe.
    • Type of provider you will observe.
  • Guidelines and Confidentiality Agreement (PDF): You must read through this document, then print and sign, or digitally sign the document (see the right column for more information regarding electronic signatures). If you are under 18 years-old a parent or guardian must sign as well.
  • Documentation of Immunizations for MMR (Rubella, Rubeola) and Hepatitis B. You can obtain documentation of these immunizations from your primary care clinic.
Requests for observation will not be coordinated or confirmed until all items have been received.

The Education Coordinator must confirm each date of observation requested, even if it is arranged directly with the provider. Applicants who do not contact the Education Coordinator prior to observing will not be allowed to stay.

In addition, observers who are not dressed professionally during their observation experience may be asked to leave.

Please make sure to submit the required paperwork well in advance of the requested dates. Requests will be coordinated in a first completed application received, first served fashion. Due to the number of requests we receive, not all requests are filled as desired, and some may be denied.

If you have questions regarding this process, please contact the Research and Education Institute at institute@tria.com or 952-806-5603.

Completed paperwork may be submitted by one of the following methods:
  • Email: institute@tria.com
  • Fax: 952-806-5469
  • Mail: TRIA Orthopaedic Center
    8100 Northland Drive
    Bloomington, MN 55431
    Attention: Observation Program
Once your request has been received and coordinated you will receive an Observation Confirmation email that will confirm the date(s)/time(s), the provider(s), and what to do/where to go when you arrive at TRIA. You may not observe in any department at TRIA Orthopaedic Center without receiving this confirmation email.
